Choosing Gifts: A Nightmare Or A Pleasure?
Do you find it difficult or easy to choose a gift for a friend, a relative, or that special person?
We like to give gifts to people. Why do we do it? Is it a tradition to give gifts on certain days in the year or is there more to giving gifts?
Gift-giving seems to be an exchange between two people that creates a connection. An experience that fills both parties with joy.
Where and when did the idea of giving gifts to others originate? This is a question that intrigues me.
The act of giving gifts exists in the animal kingdom. Male chimpanzees give female chimpanzees gifts in the form of food. It seems as if this act is to win the favor of the female chimps.
Scientists believe that earlier cavemen gave gifts to express their affection and appreciation to each other. In addition, as with the chimpanzees, men who gave gifts would attract females more easily. Sources: 1 and 2.
Early tribal leaders praised individuals for their contributions or achievements by gifting animal teeth or a unique stone that was worn as a necklace or crafted into other accessories. Source: 2.
As society and technology developed the gifts became more elaborate and decorative.
