Einbahnstraße Surprise

A couple got an unexpected surprise during their vacation looking for their parked car.

The small town where I live is a popular holiday destination. This is due to it being the capital city of the wine region in southwest Germany. Neustadt an der Weinstrasse (Newtown on the Wine Street) consists of 9 small villages.

During summer there are plenty of wine fests organized in our area. Last weekend the Haardter weinfest (Haardt wine festival) was in full swing. It draws regional and international visitors, especially with COVID-19 restrictions being lifted about a month ago.

Returning from the town center during a day out in Mannheim, I saw an English-speaking couple having a heated debate on a street corner. I heard the guy say, “I’m sure I parked the car here.”

His wife retorted: “No, it doesn’t look familiar at all. I can’t remember seeing these buildings when we parked the car.”

I strolled over, introduced myself, and asked if I can maybe help them. The lady was grateful. “Yes, please. We parked our rental car on a street called Einbahnstraße. We can’t find our car.”

I thought it was a funny situation but luckily did not burst out laughing. I explained to them that the German word “Einbahnstraße,” means a one-way…
