Fiesta Time
a Spanish religious celebration in color, dance, and song
Torremolinos, on the Costa del Sol
a Mediterranean getaway in the sun
with sandy beaches galore.
La Fería de San Miguel, fiesta time;
September, a St Michael Archangel
religious celebration.
Decorated oxen-drawn carts in the sun
brightly brimming with joyous pilgrims
en route to a shrine.
Traditional Andalusian song and dance
cheerfulness in the street procession,
a color burst street scene.
Before the pandemic, I visited Torremolinos on the Costa del Sol in sunny Spain. It was a long, long weekend break away in September.
Roaming the streets looking at the majestic architecture I saw people streaming into a street just off the central square. Curios, I investigated.
A religious procession, a fiesta celebrating La Fería de San Miguel was in progress. It was spectacular to see. Decorated carts are pulled by oxen. Men and women in traditional dress accompanied the carts singing and dancing.
I stumbled upon this fiesta by sheer accident. I am glad I did as it was remarkable with an awesome ambiance.
This poem was inspired by A-Word-A-Day prompts for May 2022 — Day 05 (Fiesta) published in Promptly Written. Thanks, Christine.
