Happened to me learning German. I was ordering a Chinese take away away eager to practice my German vocab. Two ladies standing nearby started laughing pointing at me. So I guess they found something I said or mispronounced very funny.

I decided on the spot to never speak German again. However, I continued to learn the language and understand a lot of spoken German. I have friends that can't speak English, but they understand it. Our conversations can get interesting. They speak german and I reply in English - but we do have fun. Only recently I started to speak some German again .

By the way, I am bilingual (English / Afrikaans).
