How To Make Self-Raising Flour
Need self-raising flour for baking in a recipe? It is an easy process to make your own.
Many recipes I used previously in South Africa use self-raising flour. It is not easily available in Germany and I make my own self-raising flour.
Self-raising flour contains raising agents (baking powder) which gives a great and fluffy rise to baked goods such as cakes, cupcakes, and muffins.
There are 2 ways to make self-raising flour.
Method 1: All-purpose flour and baking powder:
To make 500 grams of self-raising flour mix 475 grams of white cake flour or all purposes flour with 25 grams of baking powder. Sieve the mixture into another bowl to refine the mixture.
Method 2: All-purpose flour, cream of tartar, and bicarbonate of soda:
Mix 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of cream of tartar, and half a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda together. Sieve the mixture into another bowl to refine the mixture.
You can use any of the 2 methods above to make self-rising flour based on the ingredients in your cupboards. Self-raising flour can be stored in an airtight bowl for later use or if you prefer you can make it when needed.
