Melktert or Milktart, in English, is a classic tea-time treat in South Africa. It is also served as a dessert. You can serve it any time or when you crave a milky creamy custard-based tart.

Melktert consits of a milk custard base baked in a flaky tart crust. You can use a store-bought pie crust or make your own favorite homemade one.

Below is my favorite and simple recipe to make Melktert. When cooking the milk-egg custard the secret is to continuously stir the mixture till it thickens. Continue stirring till thoroughly cooked (about 15 minutes).

Ingredients:

1 tin sweetened condensed milk (377g)
2 tins of full-cream milk (measured with the condensed milk tin)
2 tins cream (measured with the condensed milk tin )
3 heaped tablespoons butter
4 eggs, whipped
5 tablespoons Maizena (cornflour thickening agent)
¼ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla essence
1 pre-bought sweet tart crust
