Should Men Cry?
Well, I do, and I don’t think there is anything wrong with it.
Over the last 40 years, I realized that society expects men to act according to a specific set of outdated rules and expectations. It seems to be a big taboo to shed a tear.
“But why, should it be seen as a taboo or stigma,” I asked myself a lot as a teen and young adult. I am one of those people whose face is a mirror of their soul.
I will not be a very good poker player as I struggle to keep my feelings and emotions bottled up.
I have cried on many occasions in my life, for example, when my emotions boil over, out of compassion for someone’s grief, at weddings, and while watching movies.
But let’s get back to the question I asked so many times about why it is seen as a taboo or stigma. It seems that in society, men have long been expected to embody strength, resilience, and emotional stoicism.
Traditionally crying was associated with vulnerability and weakness. At least that is what I think. Another possibility is that when men cry it makes others uncomfortable.
Well, is that a plausible excuse, I wonder. It makes me uncomfortable when someone cries regardless of their gender. This is because I am not always sure how I should respond appropriately to the…
