The Ringing Noise

“Mom, ” Amy shouted shrilly. The sound reverberated from the open plan kitchen-living room walls. Concerned, Jenny turned around from the fridge in the kitchen to look at her fourteen-year-old daughter enjoying a healthy lunch at the mahogany dining table.

“Honey, what’s wrong,” Jenny asked walking hastily over to Amy.

“Mom, my ears are making a funny noise.” Upset, Amy wiped a tear running silently over her rose-pink-tinted cheeks while her mom inspected her ears.

“Amy,” Jenny said, “I can’t see anything wrong. Are your ears aching,” she inquired with a worried expression.

“No, mom. There is a buzzing sound in my ears. Like a bumblebee got stuck in both my ears.” Jenny walked purposefully to get a magnifying glass from the storing closet in the hallway, while she kept a watchful eye on Amy fretting with her ears.

Upon her return, she scrutinizes Amy’s ears with the magnifying glass and asked inquiringly “Amy, does the buzzing in your ears make a humming sound with high-pitched noises? When did it start, today?”

“Yes mom, I told you it sounds like a bumblebee in flight, a very high pitch vibrating noise.” Looking at the mom she stated “No, it did not start today. It’s been…
