Whispers In The Wind

Part 1: Unexpected news from a stranger

Jason Edmunds

A brightly lit moon hangs in the sky over a lake or the ocean. It creates a path-like beam toward the observer. The feeling is of silence and warning like the quiet before the storm.

“I do,” the bride swoons happily. A big smile on her rosy beautiful face.

“Ugh!” I moan, switching off the television. “Please. I can’t stand it anymore. No more romance for me,” I shout. The sound bounces off the walls scaring Pooksie, my dog.

“Pooksie, come, let’s go upstairs,” I call her. She trotters over and looks at me inquisitively.

We head upstairs to my bedroom. I wonder why life is portrayed with so many ‘and-they-lived-happily-ever-after’ moments. It’s a lot of nonsense. Real life is tough. It is no place for losers.

Oh, did I learn it the hard way? I thought Pierre and I were an item. What a fool I was. I believed his “I will love you forever and ever,” mantra. It glided off his lips easily.

The night before our wedding three months ago he kissed me and told me how much he loved me. The next morning when I woke up he was gone. He didn’t leave a trace of him or his belongings in the beach house I inherited from my parents — he disappeared as if he never lived there.

The doorbell chimed loudly. Who could that be? It’s nearly midnight. I return to the living room looking for the door keys on the entrance hall table.
